About
Rights and Democracy:
Rights & Democracy (International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development), is a non-partisan organization with an international mandate. It was created by Canada’s Parliament in 1988 to encourage and support the universal values of human rights and the promotion of democratic institutions and practices around the world. Rights & Democracy works to promote the human and democratic rights defined in the United Nations’ International Bill of Human Rights. The organization currently focuses on four themes: Democratic Development, Economic and Social Rights, Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, and Women’s Rights. For more information about the organization and their work, please visit their website. http://www.dd-rd.ca/
Rights and Democracy Network:
The Rights and Democracy Network is centred on the work by student delegations at Canadian Universities and Colleges. Inspired by the objectives and work by Rights and Democracy, students across Canadian schools began addressing similar issues on campus. Student campaigns have sought to promote awareness and student activism, foster debate and discussion and provide academic and policy analysis on human rights violations and democratic development in Canada and around the world.
University of Toronto Delegation:
The Rights and Democracy Delegation at the University of Toronto is opened to all students at the University. Projects for the 2008-2009 year include the Rights and Democracy Blog, Undergraduate Journal and Speaker series and documentary nights. If you are interested in becoming involved with the U of T delegation, please contact Evelyn Chan (ev.chan(@)utoronto.ca)
