Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights comes to U of T!


On their speaking tour across Canada, Irene Petras and Andrew Makoni from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, this year’s recipient of the John Humphrey Freedom Award will stop at the University of Toronto on Monday December 1st, to discuss with students their work in addressing various human rights issues in Zimbabwe.  The talk will highlight the impact of civil society and the role of rule of law in the anlaysis of human rights.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided at 12pm. Discussion will begin at 12:30pm.

Rights and Democracy Announces Winners of John Humphrey Freedom Award

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights is the winner of Rights & Democracy’s 2008 John Humphrey Freedom Award in recognition of its courageous pursuit of justice for victims of human rights abuses inside Zimbabwe.

Named in honour of John Peters Humphrey, the McGill University law professor who prepared the first draft of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the annual John Humphrey Freedom Award includes a speaking tour of Canadian cities to help increase awareness of the recipient’s human rights work. This year’s tour will bring Ms. Petras and Mr. Makoni to take part in public events in Calgary (Nov. 27), Toronto (Dec. 2), Halifax (Dec. 5), Montreal (Dec. 8) and Ottawa (Dec. 10).

December 2nd – John Humphrey Freedom Award Tour Stops in Toronto

From November 27 to December 13, members of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, recipients of the John Humphrey Freedom Award, will tour across Canada for a series of public events to raise awareness about their human rights work.

Two members from the organization will be speaking in Toronto on Tuesday December 2nd from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the Royal Ontario Museum, including public interview with CBC’s Anna Maria Tremonti.
