Zoya Phan, a 28 year old Karen refugee from Burma is coming to speak at Huron University College about her experience as a refugee and her autobiography “Little Daughter”.

Zoya Phan was born in Burma, to the Karen ethnic group. For decades the Karen have been under attack from Burma’s military junta; Zoya’s mother was a guerrilla soldier, her father a freedom activist.

At the age of fourteen, however, Zoya’s childhood was shattered as the Burmese army attacked. Zoya and her family fled, and so began two terrible years of running from guns, as Zoya joined thousands of refugees hiding in the jungle. Her family scattered, Zoya sought sanctuary across the border in a Thai refugee camp.

In 2004, Ms. Phan fled to the UK and claimed asylum. She now lives in London and works for the human rights organization Burma Campaign UK.

6:30 Meet and Greet
7:00 Guest Speaker with QA period to follow

There will be free coffee and refreshments!

Everyone is welcome, bring your friends!

Guest speakers Marcía Ramírez, a community activist from the Intag area of Ecuador and Carlos Zorrilla, member of DECOIN (Defensa y Conservacion Ecologica de Intag), have been traveling to universities and colleges across Canada, speaking to staff and students about their experiences in the SUCCESFUL resistance movement against mining developments within Ecuador.

On March 2nd, Marcia and Carlos, along with their lawyers from Klippensteins Barristers & Solicitors of Toronto, will be announcing a lawsuit against a Canadian mining company (former Ascendant Copper) and the Toronto Stock Exchange for their alleged involvement in human rights abuses at a mining concession site in Ecuador. Huron is fortunate to be one of their selected stops after this landmark announcement!

In addition to our speakers, there will be refreshments and a documentary screening – providing critical insights from a ’peasant’ farmer perspective of the effects that mining and other global forces have upon their communities.
