Hey everyone!

After a blissful summer, we are back and ready for the 2011-2012 year! Last year was a success and we want to continue that success by adding new delegates to our team! We are looking for students Glendon and York University who are interested in joining our network. Our Clubs Day is happening on Monday September 12, 2011 from 10:00am-2:00pm and we will be having a booth on site. Come check us out and if you have any questions about the club and the network, feel free to ask us at anytime. Hope to see you guys on Clubs Day!

We have hosted a Dialogue on the Middle East! We had four York University professors who specialize on the Middle East and North Africa present on the current uprisings. Dr. Saeed Rahnema, Dr.Heidi Moghissi, Dr. Ratiba Hadj-Moussa and Dr. Nadia Habib presented on the history and democratic development in Egypt, North Africa, Iran and from a feminist perspective. This event was educational and informative to all who attended and to those who had an interest in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly those who are curious in learning more about the current state.

The event was a success packed with lots of interesting debates and we hope to see you all in our next event next week!

Hey everyone!

We have some exciting news to share with you, we will be hosting an talk “Zimbabwe: the Fight Against Impunity Goes On”! Karim Laz , Droits & Démocratie/ Rights and Democracy’s Regional Officer for Africa, will be coming in to speak about democratic development and human rights violations happening in Zimbabwe. In addition to the lectures, we will also be hosting a book drive with the DDRD, Books Without Borders. We encourage all students who have law textbooks to come to our event and drop off their used textbooks to support the Law faculty of the University of Zimbabwe.

The event on will be Tuesday March 29, 2011 at 4:30pm, in room YH172. If you are interested in attending  or if you are interested in donating your used law textbook but can’t make it to the event, please email us at glendon.ddrd@gmail.com

About Books Without Borders:

Books Without Borders project (initiated and completed in Spring 2009) is to promote awareness regarding the need at the Law Faculty of the University of Zimbabwe for student resource material, particularly human rights and international law textbooks. The impetus for this project stemmed from an acknowledgement by Irene Petras, director of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, that there is a clear need for as many human rights, public international law and all associated materials at this time for law students at the University of Zimbabwe.

Happy Valentine`s day to everyone! This year we celebrated Valentine`s day by working with Amnesty International, WOZA (Women and Men of Zimbabwae Arise). We helped raised over $500.00 by selling roses to help activist who are in Zimbabwe fight for their rights. WOZA is a special organization who help organise friendly protests regarding equal rights, Political Rights free and fair and regular elections; vote in secrecy; right to form political parties and participate in political activities; national value, aspirations and founding principles of the constitution just to name a few.

Valentine`s Day Guest Speaker
We partnered with Amnesty International by hosting a guest speaker lecture on Zimbabwae. The event was a huge success! The guest speaker presented the current state of Zimbabwe and also informed us more about WOZA, how our fundraiser will help the activist who are protesting and how we can further help WOZA.

On Wednesday February 24, 2010 at 6pm in the Glendon Manor, we will be hosting an event filled with poetry, spoken word, dance and music with all proceeds going towards Doctors Without Borders for Haiti.

This event will feature fair-trade coffee and light appetizers as well as a Slide Show about the current natural disaster in Haiti and the importance of continuing Human Rights Work in Haiti amidst the crises.

All are welcome to attend. The cost is $5.

The Glendon Delegation of Rights & Democracy will be participating in the annual Clubs Day in the Glendon Cafeteria on Monday January 11, 2010 to introduce students to our activities. We hope to see you all there!

We will be having our next meeting on Thursday January 14, 2010 in the Clubs Room to discuss our plans for the upcoming semester and the Regional Event to be held in Montreal. All are welcome to attend!

The entire Glendon Delegation would like to express our deepest sympathies to Mr. Beauregard’s family and friends. He was a strong supporter of the Student Network and he will be deeply missed.

The Network delegation at Glendon College will be hosting representatives of the 2009 John Humphrey Award laureate, Iraqi human rights organization La’Onf. Mr. Ibrahim Ismaeel, Chair of the Board, and Ms. Saba Jabbar, Programmes Coordinator, will be describing the history of non-violence and peace movements as well as the rights of women in Iraq. Le délégation du Collège Glendon accueilleront des représentants du réseau irakien pour la non-violence La’Onf, lauréat du prix John-Humphrey Droits et Démocratie 2009.
