“Canada contributing to a more democratic world”
As citizens demand more democratic processes and institutions in countries around the world,
how does Canada contribute to this growing movement for democracy?
Thursday, March 15-Saturday, March 17, 2012
Ottawa, Ontario
From monitoring elections to encouraging youth participation in politics to ensuring security for bloggers, Canada is contributing to the creation and strengthening of democratic processes and institutions and the realisation of human rights around the world.
In Canada, government as well as non-governmental organizations are developing projects and programs which support citizens in nations around the globe in exercising their democratic rights, and creating stronger democratic institutions and supporting governments to use good governance practices.
This conference will offer a glimpse into this challenging work, through presentations by representatives from Rights & Democracy, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government agencies. We’ll enhance our understanding of our own parliamentary system by visiting Parliament Hill, attending question period in the House of Commons, and meeting members of parliament.
Each of the Rights & Democracy Student Delegations is invited to nominate one representative from their delegation for a weekend of learning, networking, and taking action to build a more democratic world. The costs of participation (transportation, accommodation, food) at this event will be covered by the Student Network.
Students who will represent their delegation at this conference should send their completed application form (attached to this email) by email to network ‘at’ dd-rd.ca by Monday, February 20 at 9 am. Please mention “Ottawa Conference” in the subject of your email.
CALL FOR PAPERS
A call for papers is also being launched on the theme of democratic development. We seek undergraduate and graduate level papers (essays, theses, field research reports) from every academic discipline, including political science, international relations, geography, history, anthropology, sociology and the sciences. This call for papers is open to all members of the Student Network.
If your paper is selected, you will be invited to give a 10 minute presentation of your research during the conference, and your paper will be published on the Network website. Students whose papers are accepted will be invited to attend the event, in addition to the representatives from the delegation, and the costs of your participation will be covered by the Network.
In order to be considered, applicants should email their proposals to network ‘at’ dd-rd.ca by February 20, 2012 at 9 am. Proposals should include your name, email address, university and program, and a short summary (200 words) of the paper you would like to present.
